Obituary

Bonnie Jean (Smeal) Scott

October 20, 1934 – May 26, 2021

A longtime resident of Big Flats, NY, Bonnie passed into the arms of Jesus on Wednesday, May 26th, at home surrounded by family. Bonnie was born in Clearfield, PA to Doyle David Smeal and Sarah Alma (Shirey) Smeal. Bonnie was married to James A. Scott in Hopewell Junction, NY, in 1954.

James pre-deceased her in 2012. Bonnie was also pre-deceased by her parents, her children Elizabeth Susan Scott and Daniel Winfield Scott, and her siblings, Albert Wayne Smeal, Annabel Bessie Michael, Vera Beryl Smeal, Elsie Bernice Deese, Wavia Alma Chalfont, and Doyle David Smeal, Jr..

Bonnie is survived by her children, James (Carol) and Robert Scott. She leaves many memories to her grandchildren, Lori (Brian) Kelsall and Christopher Scott, as well as her great-grandchildren, Allison Kelsall, Brianna Kelsall, and Michael Scott; and many nieces and nephews. Bonnie is also survived by her late husband’s first cousin, Robert Henry Scott (Montgomery, PA).

Bonnie was an active member of the Community Wesleyan Church in Horseheads, NY. Over the years, she taught Sunday School, served as the Director of CYC (a children’s ministry), sang in the choir, served as Treasurer of Wesleyan Women, and was always willing to help in any way.

Bonnie was an excellent student, graduating Clearfield High School with top scores and then went to Washington, DC, where she joined sister Vera in administrative military positions. During her time in Washington she met a young man who was attached to the White House in the US Army Signal Corps. After his hitch was up, they returned to Houghton College to finish his education, and afterwards settled in Elmira, NY and started their family.

She would later put her sewing skills to good use at Iva Ripley Sewing and also enjoyed many years as a representative for Creative Expressions. At age 50, she was persuaded to attend Elmira Business Institute. She graduated with honors whereupon she was employed by Bethany Manor in the Medical Records Department and retired from there a decade later.
